Many people are uncertain about how to interact with people with disabilities. It's important to treat an individual with a disability as you would any other person. Always remember that you are interacting with a person-not his or her disability. Disabled people want to help you feel comfortable with them. A disability is just one of the many characteristics that make individuals unique, just like hair color or height. Please understand that as with the general population, some people with a disability are easier to get along with than others. Although a person's disability may affect his or her social skills, a disability should not keep people apart. Please use our tip sheets as a guide to disability etiquette and take advantage of these Online Resources for Faculty. |
